TPC Four Seasons Resort in Irving is hosting for the 27th time. After eight years as a singular host from 1986-1993, it shared the pre-cut rotation with Cottonwood Valley Golf Club for 14 editions. Since 2008, the TPC Four Seasons Resort has flown solo.
The 7,166-yard par 70 has some teeth when the wind blows, and howl it did last year, with sustained breezes up to 20 mph and gusts reaching 35 mph over the final three rounds. For this week, early forecasts are already calling for sustained winds of 12-16 mph throughout the tournament. Therefore, a winning score in the single digits under par is not an unreasonable expectation.
In 2011, TPC Four Seasons Resort averaged 72.354 strokes, checking in as the third-most challenging par 70 in non-majors. There's zero letup tee to cup. Other notable splits for the host track:
It's ranked inside the top 10 in fairways hit in each of the last four years. It sat sixth in 2011 at 52.74 percent.
It was third in greens in regulation a year ago at 56.22 percent.
In its return as the only host of the event, last year's putts-per-GIR clip of 1.828 is a high-water mark. It ranked ninth overall on TOUR for 2011.
Birdie average was a mere 2.68 last year, sixth-lowest all season.
Par-4 scoring average settled at 4.21, good for third-highest on TOUR last year.
The scrambling percentage equaled 51.43, seventh-lowest of 2011.
What's interesting is that while the profile of the course suggests that veteran grinders and those with experience at the event should emerge as contenders, the last two champions triumphed in their first appearance. Both Jason Day in 2010 and defending champion Keegan Bradley overcame the odds, at least on paper.
Day enjoyed a phenomenal week with his putter two years ago, while Bradley broke through with a ball-striking exhibition he was projecting in the months leading up to his debut.
While savvy in the wind is vital this week, ball-strikers that hit fairways as a whole (as opposed to those that mash it off the tee) and avoid bogeys should fare well. Temperatures will rise into the upper 80s and possibly touch 90 degrees. Sunny and dry conditions are expected.
